Challenge Time!!

Do you have a coat closet?  Does it house more than coats??  Was that your original plan?  If not, you are in luck!  We are focusing the coat closet!  Decide if you have outgrown any of your coats and jackets...  if you have, send them to Goodwill (or email mostlysweetwithafewnuts@gmail.com and we can post it here to see if anyone wants it....).  Decide if you want to keep any shoes in there, if so, how many?  Make sure that you have easy access to everything, if you can't see it, you won't use it!  Happy cleaning!

Pantry Challenge!!

OK ladies....  Let's head to the pantries!  As with all organizing, grouping things by type is incredibly helpful.  It may be smart to purchase bins as your group your items.  This will make them easier to access and pull out. You can also use the bins to group dinner items.  For example, label the bins Monday-Sunday.  As you plan your meals, stock the bins.  This will also help you avoid running to the store for the last minute items as you prepare dinner.   Good luck!

The New MY PLATE

USDA Presents My Plate!!
See more info here. The recommendations stay the same, but the plate brings it home! Some obvious changes: It is no longer called the "meat" group, but "protein" group meaning you don't have to eat meat to get your daily protein requirement. Also, half of the plate is fruits and vegetables. They've thrown out the term "servings" and gone with "cups" instead. So, my challenge is this: can you eat 4 cups of fruits and vegetables everyday for one week? AHHHHH!!! It's tricky, but I have tried it and challenged others to try it and you'd be surprised what tricks you can come up with.
Here are some tips:
1 cup of fruit = 1 cup of raw fruit or 1/2 cup dried fruit...see more here
1 cup of veggies = 1/2 cup cooked or 1 cup raw, unless leafy...see more here
Choose a salad as a main dish if eating out. You'd be surprised how yummy and filling they can be. Go easy on the dressing!
Add vegetables to pasta sauces
Choose a pizza with vegetables on it instead of meat
Put fruit on ice cream
I thought I was eating enough fruits and vegetables until I tried this challenge. Each day it is a conscious effort and I don't always win, but I feel like it has improved my overall health. And snacking on these foods is lower calorie!

**Don't forget to enjoy a treat once in a while too!

Couples Group Date Night!

Join us for date night!  The first date night will be held June 25th at 6pm at the Perry ward building, the theme is games. We will have uno, chess, checkers and other board/ card games.
Please bring a food item to share!

Kids are optional, we will have a group babysitter for those that bring kids and parents will chip in to cover the cost of babysitting, so that no one parent has to pay for all the babysitting.

Future date nights will be July 30th, August 27th and Sept 24th. This would be a great way to meet some of the couples in the ward.  If you would like to plan activities for these dates, please contact Sister. Katrina Gowen at 478-825-7124.

Personal History Time!

And we're off!  We are starting with the inside description of the first house you remember.  How easy is this?  (Also, these are GREAT questions to ask your parents, grandparents... you get the picture.)  And speaking of pictures, as you make your entries, why not add digital pictures?

#1  Childhood Home – Inside Description

Location.  Describe the first childhood home you remember – frame or brick – how many rooms – two story? – indoor or outdoor bathroom ;) – how was the home heated?
Describe each room as you remember it.  What kind of furniture was in the living room?  Radio or TV?  Piano?  Did the family gather there in the evenings?
Describe the kitchen.  Where did the family eat?  Where did you eat when company came?
What did your bedroom look like?  Did you share it, did you have your own bed?
Which was your favorite room and why?  Describe your favorite piece of furniture.  Do you have in your home today any furniture that came from your childhood home?
Did you have a telephone?  Describe.  Were you on a party line? Did you have a computer, and if so was it a family computer that you shared or did you have one in your room?  Did you have more than one TV?  Where were they located and where did the family watch most of the time?

From Emily's Kitchen...

Here is a great summertime marinade for chicken.  You can mix it up a little.....serve it with some in-season vegetables to the side, cut it into thin slices and serve it as a salad topping, or you can slice it thin and serve it warm with Alfredo sauce over pasta.

Herb-Lemon Marinade for Chicken

Ingredients:

  • 3 T olive oil
  • 1 T minced fresh herbs (3/4 T basil plus mix of what is on hand: parsley, chives, oregano, thyme)
  • 1 T freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 3 medium garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 t sugar
  • 1 ½ t table salt
  • ½ t ground black pepper
  • 2 T water

Directions:

Whisk together ingredients in medium bowl. Tenderize chicken with mallet and score chicken for deeper penetration of marinade. Place marinade and chicken in gallon-sized zipper-lock bag; press out as much air as possible and seal bag. Refrigerate 2-3 hours, flipping bag halfway through. Leftover chicken makes great topping for salads.

**Makes enough for 2 lbs of chicken*.*

Don't Forget!!

Stake conference is this weekend!!

Saturday Challenge!!

Time to tackle the dresser drawers!  Before you get started, grab a big bag or box so you can immediately set aside clothing for Goodwill.  As you go through your drawers, take a look at how often you are wearing your clothing.  Decide how many t-shirts you really need.  How many pairs of white socks you...  you get the point :)  If you can't remember the last time that you wore something, it's probably ok to Goodwill it.  Happy sorting!

Want To Write Your Own Personal History? Start Here!

Time Flies...

Ah, the goal to write our personal histories. But when? Who has the time?  It's just too much,we say; I have no idea where to start...  Well, we hope that these blog posts will help you, inspire you, to at least record the facts of your life, if not some of the wonderful experiences you've had.  Each blog post, one a week, will spark memories and offer guidance, but hopefully not be too much.  There are 34 entries...

President Gordon B. Hinckley said, "It is good to look to the past to gain an appreciation for the present and perspective for the future.  It is good to look upon the virtues of those who have gone before, to gain strength for whatever lies ahead.  We believe writing your history will do this for each of you."  Isaiah 30:8 says "Now go... and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever."

You do have a story to tell.

Real Women Lift Weights!!

Real Women Lift Weights!  Unfortunately, many women are afraid to workout with weights.   They think they will get too muscular and start looking like a man.  Does that sound like you?  If so, I have a couple questions for you.

1.      Did you know that 1 pound of muscle is much SMALLER than 1 pound of fat?
If you gain some muscle you will likely decrease in size, becoming more compact and tight.   Studies show that women typically don’t gain size from weightlifting, due to less of those male hormones that make muscles grow. It is extremely difficult for women to get muscle-man muscles, and I don’t know of any woman who accidentally got big like that!

2.      Are you aware that if you add muscle to your body, you will be able to eat more without gaining weight?
This means that you will burn more calories just sitting around the house.   Up to 50 calories daily, per pound of muscle you gain!   This is because for each pound of muscle you gain, you increase your resting metabolism.   Meanwhile, sweating on the treadmill (cardio) has shown to have no effect on increasing your resting metabolism.
Studies performed by Wayne Westcott, PhD found that the average woman who performs weightlifting 2 to 3 times a week for 2 months will gain nearly 2 pounds of muscle and will lose 3.5 pounds of fat.    Weightlifting has more benefits, such as decreasing your risk of osteoporosis, diabetes, heart disease and injuries.   Without lifting weights you are not likely to build any muscle, and in fact, you lose muscle as you age.

I know it can be scary to enter the weightlifting section of the gym with all those grunting dudes.   Finally,  If you start to think that you are getting too big and muscular,  just stop! It’s a no brainer.   If you are truly one of those women who gets too big, give yourself a break from the weights and your muscles will shrink.  Muscles are not easy to maintain.  When you are ready to resume weightlifting again, use lighter weight with high repetitions to maintain your muscle mass.

Perry Sisters At The Well!!

Did You Hear About Playgroup This Week?

Playgroup will be held at the Chick Fil A on 96, on Wednesday at 11:00 am.  Hope to see you there!

Can't See Your Spices??

Try this!  Pick up a shoe organizer (about $5 at Walmart), and stick it on your pantry door.  Insert your spices however you feel best (I choose to organize mine alphabetically).  I found that you can fit up to four spices in each pocket (depending on the size) and still see the labels!  If you can zoom in, you will see that I have 3 cumins.  I kept purchasing them because I couldn't see what I already had.  I love this new addition to my kitchen!!

New Challenge Tomorrow!!

Under the kitchen sink!!!  Decide what you really need to keep under there.  Do you have old sponges?  Toss them out!  How about empty dish soap bottles?  Get rid of them!  If you store cleaning supplies under your sink, consider buying a Tupperware bin to store them in.  This will help you keep them all in the same place and keep track of what you have.  Good luck!

From Emily's Kitchen...

If you are a chicken lasagna type person, you will love this one!  I serve it with green salad with raspberry vinaigrette, and french bread.

Creamy Chicken Lasagna

Ingredients:

  • 1 T olive oil
  • ½ yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 stalk celery, diced
  • 5 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • ½ red pepper, diced
  • 1 large clove of garlic, minced
  • 1 T chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 t kosher salt
  • ¼ t freshly ground pepper
  • **Sautee all vegetables over medium heat until onion is translucent. Remove from heat and stir in parsley, salt, and pepper.

  • 4 T unsalted butter
  • ½ c flour
  • 1 ½ c low sodium chicken broth
  • ½ c whole milk/cream mixture (more cream if you want it rich, more milk if you want it lighter)
  • ½ c parmesan cheese
  • ½ t kosher salt
  • ½ t pepper
  • Grating of nutmeg
  • **Melt the butter, whisk in the flour and stir until it smells a little like popcorn. Add the stock, 1 c at a time, whisking until smooth. Cook the sauce until it thickens to the consistency of cream soup. Stir in the milk/cream mixture, paremesan, salt, pepper, nutmeg. Heat until the cheese is completely melted. Pour sauce over the vegetable mixture and stir to combine.
  • 6 ounces shredded Monterey jack cheese
  • ½ c grated parmesan cheese
  • Chicken from half a rotisserie chicken
  • Lasagna noodles, cooked according to package directions for a la dente

Directions:

**Spread a thin layer of cream sauce in the bottom of an 8 X 8 pan. Layer 4 noodles over bottom of the pan, cutting off the excess noodles that hang over. Then layer with half the chicken, 1/2 cup of jack cheese, and 1/3 of cream sauce. Repeat with 4 noodles, the rest of the chicken, 1/2 c of jack, 1/3 of cream sauce. Next repeat with 4 noodles, the rest of cream sauce, and the rest of jack and parmesan cheese.
**Cook covered at 350 for 20 minutes, remove foil and cook another 15-25 until the lasagna is bubbling and the cheese on top is melted. Let rest 15 minutes before serving. Serve with salad (with Feta cheese and a sweet dressing like raspberry vinaigrette and French bread)
**Can double the recipe and use a 9 x 13 pan.
